Soft white light. Glowing orange, glowing light. Lights in a Stockholm church must have been the inspiration for the design of modern Swedish lighting systems and lighting shops that can have no rivals. I have never seen such captivating and beautiful light fittings as I have in a Stockholm church. And this is paralleled in all the windows of most homes in Stockholm as they dress them for Advent: a light-filled star, a gleam from little candles set into a container, illuminating all day and night. The lit windows are surely there to combat the few hours of daylight that barely appear this time of year in Sweden. Five hours if they are lucky. But how well they combat this gloom by radiating twilight: tasteful, timed and tuned for the whole day. In their coming and going, as they tread on ice and snow in the streets, the Stockholmers return home to a golden hue.
